Sun Chemical Receives RecyClass Certification
- In March 2026, Sun Chemical received RecyClass certification for its SunUno SoliCycle polyurethane-based solvent-based nitrocellulose (NC) alternative ink system, covering flexographic and gravure inks plus SunLam laminating adhesives.
- The certification covers the PE flexible recycling stream, including colored PE, making Sun Chemical one of the first suppliers certified for solvent-based NC alternative inks and the first to offer a complete certified system combining NC alternative inks with laminating adhesives.
- The combined system targets converters seeking a single-supplier platform for recyclable flexible packaging, inks, and adhesives, responding to growing scrutiny under European recycling protocols that nitrocellulose-based inks can reduce the recyclability and value of recycled plastics.
- Sun Chemical says its polyurethane alternatives deliver stability, high-quality print performance, and improved recycling compatibility, with PU resin supply secured through parent company DIC and adhesives specialist Sapici, acquired in 2022.
- Romain Cleret, Flexible Packaging Product Director at Sun Chemical EMEA, said the system enables customers to approach the industry's transition to more recyclable packaging systems with greater confidence, positioning the company among Europe's first to obtain RecyClass certification for multi-purpose solvent-based NC alternative inks.
Sun Chemical has received RecyClass certification for its SunUno SoliCycle solvent-based nitrocellulose alternative ink system for flexible packaging, becoming one of the first suppliers to obtain RecyClass certification for solvent-based NC alternative inks and the first to offer a complete certified system combining NC alternative inks with laminating adhesives.
The certification was obtained in March 2026 and covers the SunUno SoliCycle polyurethane-based ink range for flexographic and gravure printing, as well as Sun Chemical's SunLam laminating adhesives, which are certified for the PE flexible recycling stream (including colored PE). The combined system is aimed at converters seeking a single-supplier platform for recyclable, flexible packaging, inks and adhesives.
This development is a response to growing scrutiny of nitrocellulose-based inks, which can negatively affect the recyclability and value of recycled plastics under European recycling protocols. Sun Chemical says its polyurethane alternatives offer stability, high-quality print performance and improved recycling compatibility, with PU resin supply secured through parent company DIC and adhesives specialist Sapici, acquired in 2022.
Romain Cleret, Flexible Packaging Product Director at Sun Chemical EMEA, said: "We are proud to be among the first companies in Europe to obtain RecyClass certification for multi-purpose solvent-based NC alternative inks." "The system enables our customers to approach the industry's transition to more recyclable packaging systems with greater confidence."

Recently, the Tropical Crop Origin Processing Team of the Institute of Processing, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) systematically elucidated the regulatory mechanism of metal ions on the structure, properties and food preservation functions of spent coffee grounds-based films, providing new ideas for the high-value utilization of spent coffee grounds and the development of degradable food packaging materials. As the main by-product of the coffee industry, spent coffee grounds are produced in huge quantities globally each year, but most are landfilled as waste, which easily causes environmental problems such as water pollution and methane emissions. It is worth noting that,
