Bobst and Michelman Target PPWR Barriers
- Bobst and Michelman introduced mono-material polyethylene and paper-based structures for recyclable high-barrier packaging to help converters meet EU PPWR requirements ahead of the January 2030 deadline.
- OneBarrier PrimeCycle is a recyclable mono-material polyethylene structure combining MDO-PE film, an ultra-thin Michelman primer, and Bobst vacuum metallization; its unprinted structure has up to 98% polyethylene content, a 98% recyclability rate verified through external cyclos-HTP testing, and oxygen and moisture barrier performance comparable to aluminum foil.
- OneBarrier FibreCycle is a paper-based high-barrier structure using an oxygen barrier primer, vacuum metallization, and a heat seal coating applied in two wet coating stages; it achieves an oxygen transmission rate of 0.02-0.1 under tropical conditions while maintaining moisture resistance, with recyclability validated according to CEPI harmonized and Western Michigan University protocols.
- The companies also presented a proof-of-concept bio-based, plastic-free coating system designed to comply with the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive; it can run on industrial packaging equipment at speeds of up to 350 pouches per minute while achieving 100% seal performance.
- Another development uses an ultra-thin metallized BOPP film laminated to a paper substrate as an option to replace aluminum foil barrier layers; customers can test and develop structures at Bobst's global competence centers and Michelman's global technical centers.
Bobst and Michelman presented the latest progress in their collaboration on recyclable high-barrier packaging, introducing mono-material polyethylene and paper-based structures designed to help converters meet the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation ahead of the January 2030 deadline.
The two companies have collaborated for more than a decade in the field of sustainable barrier packaging and have released the latest advances on two flagship structures. OneBarrier PrimeCycle is a recyclable mono-material polyethylene structure that combines MDO-PE film, an ultra-thin Michelman primer and Bobst vacuum metallization technology. The unprinted structure contains up to 98% polyethylene content, achieves a 98% recyclability rate verified through external testing with cyclos-HTP, and offers oxygen and moisture transmission performance comparable to aluminum foil.
OneBarrier FibreCycle is a paper-based high-barrier structure that uses an oxygen barrier primer, vacuum metallization and a heat seal coating, applied in two wet coating stages. The final structure achieves an oxygen transmission rate of 0.02-0.1 under tropical conditions while maintaining moisture resistance, and its recyclability was validated according to CEPI harmonized and Western Michigan University protocols.
The companies also presented a proof-of-concept bio-based, plastic-free coating system designed to comply with the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive; these structures can run on industrial packaging equipment at speeds of up to 350 pouches per minute, achieving 100% seal performance. Another development uses an ultra-thin metallized BOPP film laminated to a paper substrate as an option to replace aluminum foil barrier layers.
“We need to achieve the same barrier performance on more challenging and less capable substrates,” said Nick Copeland, R&D Director of Barrier Solutions at Bobst. “This performance must be achieved while also being maintained at every conversion step.”
Thierry Van Mighem, European Sales Director at Michelman, added: “By working together with different stakeholders in the value chain, we can accelerate innovation and shorten time to market.”
Bobst and Michelman customers can test and develop structures at Bobst's global competence centers and Michelman's global technical centers.

Recently, the Tropical Crop Origin Processing Team of the Institute of Processing, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) systematically elucidated the regulatory mechanism of metal ions on the structure, properties and food preservation functions of spent coffee grounds-based films, providing new ideas for the high-value utilization of spent coffee grounds and the development of degradable food packaging materials. As the main by-product of the coffee industry, spent coffee grounds are produced in huge quantities globally each year, but most are landfilled as waste, which easily causes environmental problems such as water pollution and methane emissions. It is worth noting that,
